The Gaimei N.N. Multipurpose Neighborhood Community Center and Banquet Hall stands as a poignant testament to the memory of a beloved daughter, tragically taken from the Woah-tee family during an unexpected incident on the grounds of the University of Maryland Baltimore County in April 1998. In the aftermath of this heart-wrenching loss, Dr. and Mrs. Woah-tee embarked on a noble mission to immortalize their daughter’s legacy.
Determined to honor the memory of their cherished Gaimei, the Woah-tee family envisioned a place that would serve as a beacon of hope and a hub of community enrichment. In honor of their daughter’s enduring spirit, they established this extraordinary establishment, thereby bestowing upon it her cherished name.
Operating within the purview of the organization helmed by Dr. Woah-tee, aptly titled The Bong County Liberia/Maryland U.S.A Educational Cultural Foundation, Inc., the Gaimei N.N. Multipurpose Neighborhood Community Center and Meeting Banquet has undertaken a multifaceted mission. This establishment, deeply rooted in the heart of its community, has not only been a symbol of remembrance but also a wellspring of invaluable services.
Over the years, this center has exemplified a commitment to the betterment of society. Offering a diverse array of services, it has extended its hand to those in need through initiatives such as the provision of General Educational Development (GED) programs, fundraising campaigns dedicated to the support of refugees in Liberia, West Africa, and a steadfast partnership with the local Food Bank. In tandem with the Food Bank, this center plays an integral role in ensuring the distribution of sustenance to community members, on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Beyond these remarkable services, The Gaimei N.N. Multipurpose Neighborhood Community Center and Banquet Hall stands as a testament to the vast potential within community centers across the nation. Its profound impact on the community it serves underscores the profound importance of such establishments in nurturing a vibrant, resilient, and compassionate society.
The Gaimei N.N. Multipurpose Neighborhood Community Center and Banquet Hall was developed 1998 by Dr. Woah-tee. The Center was named after his late daughter who was killed in a fatal car accident when her car was struck by police cruiser on the UMBC campus. After the tragic incident, the family wanted to make sure the memory of Gaimei Woah-tee would be remembered forever.
The community center reputation is known for conducting various activities beneficial to communities within the surrounding areas of the multi-purpose community center. In the past we’ve held fund raisers for school events, community activities and political functions for both domestic and International travelers. There have been back to school functions providing book bags, pencils, pens and other necessities students may need for the upcoming school year. Dr. Woah-tee has been employed in the Baltimore public school system for more than 30 years. Therefore, he was determined to make certain each school year students within the surrounding communities had the majority of their school items in conjunction with back to school activities.
At times, The Center is advertised in the public newspaper for rental. Most individuals that requested the center utilized that opportunity to host bake sales, baby showers, GED programs, yard sales, union balls, dance and music auditions, appreciation dinners for teachers and car washes from time to
time. The Center has catered to many more activities in the past and hopes to continue serving the community, as well as, maintaining a positive image to continue the growth of Gaimei N.N. Multipurpose Neighborhood Community Center and Banquet Hall.
As we move forward, the family wants to make certain that Dr. Woah-tee’s dream lives on and continues to benefit and inspire the lives of all nationalities. On May 31, 2009, Dr. Woah-tee was murdered in his community center by unknown individuals. We want to make sure that his voice is heard through us and his dreams are brought to reality by enhancing The Center and bettering all operations that he began in the United States and overseas.
